About this approach
Laetrile and amygdalin are related products marketed as alternative cancer treatments. Amygdalin occurs in some fruit pits and other plants and can release cyanide in the body. The marketing name vitamin B17 is misleading: it is not an established vitamin required for health. Clinical evidence does not show that these products effectively treat cancer. Their natural origin does not make them safe, and apricot kernels or oral preparations can create particularly serious poisoning risks.
Where it fits: Unproven cancer treatment with cyanide-poisoning risk
Where this treatment is used
Human clinical investigation failed to demonstrate meaningful benefit, and laboratory theories about selectively releasing cyanide in tumor cells have not produced a proven therapy. Cancer symptoms or scans can change for many reasons, so testimonials cannot override controlled clinical evidence and known toxicity. Products sold under the names laetrile, amygdalin and B17 may differ in composition, creating additional uncertainty. The route of administration also changes exposure and cannot be used to dismiss poisoning concerns. There is no established nutritional deficiency that requires taking this substance.
Procedure and practical considerations
Cyanide poisoning can cause headache, dizziness, nausea, breathing difficulty, confusion, low blood pressure, coma or death. Oral products can be especially hazardous, and vitamin C or certain foods may increase the risk. Uncertain product strength adds to the danger. Suspected poisoning requires emergency medical attention; do not wait for a routine clinic visit.
