Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT)

Cancer treatment & testing

Established focused radiation for selected tumors

SBRT delivers carefully targeted external radiation to a defined tumor, usually in fewer treatment sessions than conventional radiation schedules. Detailed imaging, positioning and motion management help concentrate treatment while limiting exposure to nearby organs. It can be used for selected primary tumors or a limited number of metastatic sites. SBRT treats the planned location; it does not automatically address cancer elsewhere in the body. Suitability depends on the tumor’s size, position, prior treatment and overall cancer plan.

CURRENT CLINICAL USE

Where this treatment is used

SBRT is established in several settings, including selected early lung cancers and other carefully chosen local treatment situations. A multidisciplinary review may compare it with surgery, other radiation schedules, ablation and systemic treatment. Precision requires a planning scan and reproducible positioning; tumors that move with breathing may need additional techniques. The word stereotactic describes the targeting method, not a guarantee of complete tumor eradication. Brain stereotactic radiosurgery is related but has a separate planning context. Follow-up evaluates both cancer response and delayed effects, and scans may show radiation-related changes that need expert interpretation.

WHAT TREATMENT MAY INVOLVE

Procedure and practical considerations

Risks depend strongly on the treatment site and nearby structures. Fatigue and localized irritation may occur. Chest treatment can cause cough, lung inflammation or chest-wall discomfort, while other sites have different organ-specific risks. A short treatment course does not eliminate late complications.
