Why one price rarely tells the full story

A quoted treatment price may cover only part of the episode of care. Consultations, pathology review, imaging, laboratory tests, clinician fees, facility charges, anesthesia, pharmacy, devices, supportive services, and follow-up may be billed separately. Travel and time away from work add another layer.

Questions about the written estimate

  1. Can you provide an itemized written estimate?
  2. Which dates and services does it cover?
  3. Are professional and facility fees both included?
  4. Are laboratory, pathology, imaging, pharmacy, and anesthesia included?
  5. Which services may be delivered by another organization?
  6. What could cause the estimate to increase?
  7. How long is the estimate valid?

Questions about insurance

  1. Is the clinician in network, and is the facility also in network?
  2. Which services require prior authorization?
  3. Who submits the authorization request?
  4. What information has the insurer provided in writing?
  5. Could any clinician involved be out of network?
  6. Who helps if a claim is denied?

Questions about self-pay care

  1. Which services are always self-pay?
  2. Is a deposit required, and when is the balance due?
  3. What is the cancellation and refund policy?
  4. What happens financially if treatment cannot proceed?
  5. Are payment plans or financial-assistance applications available?
  6. Are follow-up visits included?

Questions about travel and daily costs

  1. How many visits and nights near the center are expected?
  2. Could treatment extend the stay?
  3. Must a caregiver travel too?
  4. Does the center offer lodging rates, shuttles, or parking help?
  5. Can consultations or follow-up happen remotely?
  6. Which local services will be needed after returning home?

Track the answers in one place

For every call, record the date, department, person, phone number, estimate or reference number, and promised follow-up. Save benefits statements, authorizations, estimates, receipts, and bills together. Compare the estimate with later bills and ask about unfamiliar charges promptly.
