Hospice care

Supportive care

Coordinated comfort-focused care near the end of life

Hospice care provides coordinated support when the focus of care has shifted toward comfort near the end of life. It can include symptom treatment, nursing, practical equipment, emotional and spiritual support, and help for relatives. Care may be provided at home or in a facility, depending on the service and needs. Hospice is distinct from earlier palliative care, which can accompany cancer treatment at any stage. Understanding eligibility and what the service actually provides helps families plan with fewer uncertainties.

CURRENT CLINICAL USE

Where this treatment is used

Hospice is an established model of end-of-life care, with rules and service arrangements that vary by country and payer. In the United States, Medicare’s hospice benefit requires certification of a limited prognosis under its criteria and an election of hospice care for the terminal illness; it is not a prediction of an exact date of death. The team develops a plan for symptoms, care needs and family support, and eligibility can be reassessed. Hospice does not mean that comfort treatment stops. It does change how care for the terminal illness is organized and paid for under the relevant benefit. Discussing options early allows time to compare services and express preferences.

WHAT TREATMENT MAY INVOLVE

Procedure and practical considerations

Treatment and coverage choices can have important consequences, so review them with the hospice and oncology teams before enrollment. New symptoms still deserve a response consistent with the care plan, with clear instructions for whom to call at any hour.
