About this approach
Radioembolization delivers tiny radioactive particles through a catheter into arteries supplying a liver tumor. It is often called Y-90 treatment or selective internal radiation therapy. The aim is to concentrate radiation in selected liver tissue while limiting exposure elsewhere. A mapping procedure assesses blood supply and potential passage of particles outside the intended area. Radioembolization differs from bland embolization and chemoembolization, and it is not the same as a radioligand medicine circulated through the bloodstream.
Where it fits: Established liver-directed radiation for selected tumors
Where this treatment is used
Radioembolization is used in selected primary liver cancers and liver-dominant metastatic settings, with treatment goals determined by the diagnosis and overall plan. It may provide local disease control or form part of a strategy involving other treatments. Suitability depends on liver reserve, tumor distribution, vascular anatomy and the mapping assessment. The procedure’s value should be compared with surgery, ablation, external radiation and systemic options relevant to the case. Delivering treatment successfully does not guarantee complete tumor eradication or a survival benefit for every patient. A multidisciplinary team should explain why this liver-directed approach is appropriate and how follow-up scans and liver tests will guide any additional therapy.
Procedure and practical considerations
Risks include pain, fatigue, nausea, infection and injury to the liver or nearby tissues. If radioactive particles reach unintended areas, they may damage organs such as the stomach or lungs. Catheter placement and contrast imaging also have risks, including bleeding and reactions to contrast. The mapping study is an important safety step.
