About this approach
Metabolic therapy is not one standardized cancer treatment. The term can describe legitimate research on cancer-cell metabolism, dietary experiments or commercial programs combining supplements, medicines and restrictive diets. Some programs also include detoxification practices. These approaches do not share a single evidence base.

Where this treatment is used
Cancer metabolism is an active research field, including work on biological pathways that might become treatment targets. That research should be distinguished from a commercial protocol carrying the same label. Changes in glucose, ketones or other blood measurements are not interchangeable with tumor response or survival. Patients can ask whether the proposal is a clinical trial, whether an appropriate comparison group exists and how benefits will be separated from effects of conventional treatment received at the same time.
Procedure and practical considerations
Risks depend on the ingredients and procedures. Restrictive diets can worsen inadequate nutrition, while supplements or repurposed medicines may interact with oncology drugs. Programs involving enemas or unneeded infusions add their own hazards. A long protocol can also make it difficult to identify the cause of an adverse effect.
